The second event in the Manawatu Whanganui Futures Series was held on Thursday 22 April at Rangitikei Golf Club, alongside the Manawatu Wanganui Age Group Champs.
28 young players competed in either 18 hole, 9 hole or 6 hole participation events, while a further 51 players competed in the 36 hole Age Group Champs.
The format of the Futures Event Series allows young golfers of any stage of development to take part, with a player as young as 3 years of age taking part in the 6 hole team golf format, along with 4 other young players new to the game.
Players that have moved onto a stage of playing individually had options of competing off the short junior tees in either 6 hole or 9 holes, while those a step further played off the yellow tees over 9 holes. For players wishing to play 18 holes, they were given the opportunity at Rangitikei to play off the yellow tees, scored as stableford.
There were some notable scores over all individual formats with the best score over the 6 hole off the shorter Junior tees from Manawatu's Stellan Lawrence of just 30 shots. In the 9 hole format off the orange tees, Castlecliff's Shokoro Yamada shot 46, and Manawatu's Sophie Aburn shot a very good 50. From the 9 hole yellow tee format, Manawatu's Henri Anema shot 47, and club mate Kexu Chen had 48.
In the 18 hole format which played alongside the 36 hole players in the afternoon, the leading stableford scores were from Feilding's, Zara Lynch, with an extremely impressive 46 points, followed by a visitor from Napier, Devon Henare, with 40 points, and Palmerston Norths, Liam Southall in 3rd with 36 points.
Congratulations to all 28 participants in the Futures event. Our next Futures Event will be held at Eketahuna Golf Club on Sunday 16th May starting at 9am. All juniors are welcome to participate.
