On Sunday 31 January the annual Joe Kells and PN Classic was held here at the Palmerston North Golf Club. The day was very hot and the challenging heat, fast greens and great playing conditions got the best of scoring on the day for most players.
For many players the event was being used as trials for representative teams and for the upcoming interclub programme for Manawatu/Wanganui with visiting players coming from Wellington, Auckland and the Wairarapa chasing NZ Order of Merit points.
Kaleb Idemaru from the Manawatu Golf Club prevailed in the Joe Kells with an even par total of 144 for the 36 holes. A three under 69 in the afternoon was the knockout blow as others faltered.
Only four rounds were better than par all day. The Joe Kells Rose Bowl has some very fine names as winners such as Tim Wilkinson and Sloan Morpeth. Previous winners Rhys Harold from Manawatu and Junior Tatana from Palmerston North were a shot further back on 145 with another shot back to Angus Findlay from Manawatu, another previous winner, and Riki Kauika from Whanganui.
The members net was won by Jonathon Andrieux from Palmerston North on 140, Bruce Merhtens from Feilding on 142 and four players on 144
Palmerston North member Casey Chettleburgh was the runaway winner in the PN Classic for ladies shooting 155 and winning by 8 shots from teenager Sera Raj of the Whanganui Golf Club. The ladies net was won by Pahiatua member Lisa Cotton on 148 followed by Palmerston North member Shireen Harold with 151.
The event was sponsored by loyal club member Shane Walker and Fowler Homes. The prize table was extensive and kindly supported by Richard Best and the team from Golf Distributors and players were full of praise for the condition of the course considering the extremely variable weather we have had the last few weeks.
