The Joe Kells Memorial (men) and PN Classic (women) events are being played this Sunday at Palmerston North Golf Club. The event has attracted a good field of 80 players at time of the draw being prepared. Late entries will still be taken by contacting Palmerston North Golf Club on 06 351 0700.
This year the event returns to its traditional late January date, so underfoot conditions should be reasonably firm and fast. The forecast looks fine and very warm, which will be a change from last years wet underfoot conditions when the event was held in June.
Most of the Manawatu Wanganui rep players will be competing this year as the event is once again on the district OOM series. It is also on the NZ OOM, which has helped attract a few players from outside the district, which is great to see.
Last years winners, Junior Tatana & Brydie Hodge are both competing, but will have plenty of challengers for this year years title. Tatana's most likely challengers will be from Palmerston North clubmates Regan Cording, and Sam Nichols, and last years Toro number one Regan McConaghty. A number of other rep players are also quite capable of challenging. For Hodge, challengers will include Wanganui teenager, Tara Raj, Vivian Lu from Auckland and Zhuoyi Hu from Wellington.
Additions to the district this year include former Tasman rep Sam Nichols, whom is looking to be available for Manawatu Wanganui this year. Former professional player, Lisa Herbert, has returned to the district from Auckland, and may be available for Manawatu Wanganui in the national women's masters event to be held in April.
We wish all competitors participating on Sunday all the best.
