Amber Rose looks to defend Lower North Island Matchplay Title

Lower North Island Girls Match play

Results from Day 1 - Brydie Hodge top qualified with 74 along with Wellingtons Gabrielle Palado. Amber Rose shot 75 and Keita Durie 78 to round out the top 4. The girls now play two rounds of matchplay tomorrow to decide the 2012 champion. Other district scores - Dana Garrett 95, Mackenzie Coutts 94 and Katherine Paskins 93.

For the past two years a hugely successful girls match play event has been played at Marton Golf Club and this week it will host over 20 entrants from the Wairarapa, Taranaki, Wellington and Manawatu Wanganui districts.

The event is structured to fill the gap between small junior events and elite womenâ€quot;™#39;s events, targeted at players on 5 plus handicaps who are not ready to step up to the National and Charles Tour events played in the same time frame.

An 18 hole strokeplay qualifying round is followed by 36 holes of matchplay and last year saw the top two qualifiers Keita Durie and Amber Thompson-Newth play each other for the title with Thompson Newth prevailing 5/4 in the final. Third place was shared by Katie Smart (Wairarapa) and Vanessa Bouvet (Taranaki) after 18 holes could not separate them. The 2012 event should see four or five interprovincial players mixing it with players on handicaps up to 44 which will provide great inspiration for those at the top end of the handicap list.
