The Manawatu Wanganui Strokeplay also known as the Challenge Cup was played yesterday in fine overhead conditions at Palmerston North Golf Club. Played over 36 holes the event is part of both the NZ Order of Merit and the Manawatu Wanganui Order of Merit.
Manawatu's Regan McConaghty shot rounds of 72 and 69 to take out the mens event by 1 shot over Palmerston North's Junior Tatana. Tatana fired a 4 under 68 in the morning to go into the afternoon with a 4 shot lead, but 4 late bogeys late in round 2 resulting in a 74 opened the door for McConaghty as he charged home with a couple of late birdies.
Feildings, Liam Finlayson, shot rounds of 74 and 71 to finish a clear 3rd. Apiti's Paul Early was the overall net winner with a net total of 140.
In the womens division the visitor from Royal Wellington Zhuoyi Hu was the runaway victor with rounds of 72 and 77. Hu is just 12 years of age playing off a 3.1 handicap, so is a player to watch for the future. In second place 10 shots back was Levin's, Brydie Hodge, (81, 78) and Manawatu teenager, Lily Griffin (78, 81). Another Manawatu teenager Mudra Lakhani, finished 4th a further shot back (81, 79). Wanganui's Tara Raj withdrew after the morning round due to injury. Feilding's Sharon Boxall was the net winner on 144.
Many thanks to all the players that competed and to Palmerston North Golf Club for hosting the day. The course was in very good condition considering the recent weather conditions.
