Hawkestone win B Grade

Congratulations to Hawkestone for taking out the B Grade Pennant at the finals day played at Wanganui Golf Club yesterday. It has been a long time coming for the Hawkestone team that have competed toward the top of the B Grade competition for a number of years.

In the semi finals Hawkestone defeated Marton 6.5 - 2.5 to set up a final against top seeds Castlecliff. Castlecliff defeated Linton Camp 7.5 - 1.5 in their semi final clash. Castlecliff had already defeated Hawkestone in the final round robin match at Hawkestone Golf Club, therefore were heading into the final as the favourite. However Hawkestone could never be written off as they had a solid and experienced line up. Their wins in the singles matches went to Hamish McDonald, Ross Geary and Glenn Burgess, with Mike Taiuru securing a half against former Manawatu Wanganui Toro rep Hayden Ring at number 1. Hawkestone also secured 2.5 wins out of 3 in the fourball matches, to complete a 6 to 3 victory.

Hawkestone now have the right to be automatically promoted to A Grade for the 2018 pennant season, however will need to find two other top notch players to compete in that grade as 8 players are required rather than the 6 players in B Grade.

Tawhero now look certain to finish at the bottom of the A Grade competition, which will mean they will probably be back in B Grade next year.

Other pennant competitions:

The final round robin matches will take place next weekend at Levin Golf Club, and will determine the semi finalists. Manawatu, Palmerston North and Taihape are now guaranteed semi final spots. Feilding and Foxton are both in contention to be the other semi finalist. If Feilding beat Taihape they will go through, however if they lose and Foxton beat Tawhero, then Foxton will get through. The Feilding vs Taihape match should be a close one, if all players are available.

Manawatu will play Palmerston North to determine the top seed heading into the semi-finals. Manawatu is currently unbeaten, and Palmerston North will have to win well to sneak ahead.

In the Palmanui competition, with one round still to be played, Palmerston North have remained unbeaten to secure top spot, and will play Manawatu in the final, as they have now secured second place.

In the Handicap Pennant the semi finalists have now been found and the finals will be played at Marton Golf Club on 7 May. Marton will play Feilding in one semi, and Manawatu will play Levin in the other. Marton have the home course advantage after finishing top of the round robin competition.
