Eight Manawatu Wanganui players are contesting the NZ Strokeplay Champs which started today at Hastings Golf Club (Bridge Pa).
In the mens field Manawatu Golf Club players Trent Munn, Regan McConaghty, Greg Shaw and Guy Perry, along with Feildings Liam Finlayson are contesting. It has been a reasonably slow start for all the players with Munn the best placed at 1 over par. Perry & Finlayson both had first round scores of 76 (+4), while Shaw and McConaghty were one further back after 77's. All these players will need to record decent rounds tomorrow to ensure making the half way cut. The leader after round one was the South Island Amateur Champion Mark Hutson with an impressive 7 under 65. NZ Rep Nick Coxon was second with a 67.
In the girls section Wanganui's Tara Raj is the best placed of our local players with a 5 over round of 79, while Manawatu's Lily Griffin shot 86 (+12) and Mudra Lakhani had 89 (+15). A couple of players currently share the lead at -1, with plenty of players still out on the course yet to finish their rounds.
