LawnMaster Horizon Golf NZPGA at Manawatu

Great news for the golfing public with the recent announcement that the 2017 NZPGA will be played at Manawatu Golf Club from March 2 - 5. This will provide some spectacular golf viewing with many top Australasian Tour Pro's lining up to play. LawnMaster and Horizon Golf will co-sponsor this event. The Manawatu Golf Club took over the hosting of this event from Remuera, who hosted the event last year under Holden sponsorship.

The event will be free for spectators, so will provide local golfers with the ideal opportunity to watch top level golf at home

As an extra boost for the event, former Manawatu Golf Club junior, and current USPGA Champions Tour player will return home to compete in the event, before also heading to Queenstown the following week to play the NZ Open - an event he won in 1992, when hosted at Paraparaumu Beach.

For Waite this was the perfect opportunity to head back to NZ play in the two premier men's golfing events on our calendar, particularly with the NZPGA being hosted at the club he learned to play golf at.

For people that do not know much about Grant Waite, he first went to the US on a golf scholarship at Oklahoma University, before turning professional and gaining playing rights to the USPGA Tour. In 1993 a year after winning the NZ Open, he won on the PGA Tour at the Kemper Open.He remained on tour for many years however despite many top finishes he was never able to earn a second win. He did however come very close, when going head to head down the stretch against Tiger Woods at the 2000 Canadian Open. Waite was sitting good on the 18th hole, when Tiger pulled off what many regard as the best ever shot to set up his one shot victory.

Waite was always regarding as one of the best ball strikers on tour, and was frequently near the top of the ball striking rankings year after year. His best ever competitive score was a 60 in the final round of the 1996 Pheonix Open.

Now he is a member of the over 50's Champions Tour, which has reignited his tournament golf career, while also coaching some tour players.

Anyone wanting to hear more about Grant Waite's career can do so by attending the NZPGA Dinner on Tuesday 28 February, where he will be the guest speaker. Contact the club for further information.
