At this stage 72 players have registered to play in the Challenge Cup to be played at Rangitikei Golf Club this Sunday. This event is the Manawatu Wanganui 36 hole Strokeplay, and is the third event on the district order of merit.
The Rangitikei course is in very good condition for the event, and will provide a fair but challenging layout to all competitors. It is a course where the ability to shape the ball off the tee, and position the ball well for the approach shots, can be rewarded. The greens are not large, but there is plenty of slope on them to test players chipping and putting games.
Favourites to win the mens gross title will include most of the players vying for the national Interprovicial team. Junior Tatana, Regan Cording and Tane North (Wanganui Open winner) are three main contenders, along with Guy Perry, Regan McConaghty, Liam Finlayson, Greg Shaw, and Tony Chettleburgh (Horowhenua Open Winner). A number of others are also capable shooting the scores required to win the event.
In the girls section Wanganui 13 year old Tara Raj, will be the big favourite to take her third straight OOM win, however a number of challengers will be up to try and secure the win, which includes Tania Hook, Mudra Lakhani, Leanne Brown, and the experienced duo of Jill Hall and Jenny Ritchie.
For most of the field however, enjoying the day and trying to get amongst the net prizes will be more in their focus. We wish all competitors all the best for a fun and successful day.
We will continue to take late entries until Friday for anyone else wanting to take part. The weather forecast is looking pretty good at this stage. Please call Rhys Watkins on 021 073 2013, or enter online at http://www.mwga.co.nz/entry_results
