The final round of the Women's Silver and District pennants was played on Monday at Rangitikei Golf Club. The Metservice weather forecast looked a little grim heading into the day, however thankfully Rangitikei turned it on with a dry day overhead. It may have been a little cold, but the the warm wood fire greeted players as they returned to the clubhouse.
The District pennant competition section winners had already been decided with Rangatira taking out section one and receiving the Jean Whitehead Shield, and Marton taking out section two to win the Bessie Fullerton-Smith Shield. However the final round saw teams playing matches against teams with the same placing in the other division to determine final placing heading into next years combined, one division only competition. All eyes were on the top match between Rangatira and Marton for the Womens District Assn Shield. This was won by Marton.
The Silver pennant competition was a nail biter to the end, partly due to Eketahuna defaulting to Rangatira, whom were second and obtained the maximum points, putting them on 17 points, the same as Marton heading into the round. So Marton had to win or at least draw against Manawatu. The Manawatu ladies tried their best to upset proceedings, but had to settle with a draw with Marton, giving them both one point, and that is all Marton needed to win this year competition.
Congratulations Marton on both wins.
Huge thanks to all players that competed in this competition at any stage throughout the season.
