Handicap pennant semi-finalists decided

The final round robin match in the men's handicap pennant was played last Sunday at Rangatira Golf Club with 6 teams still in with a chance to make the play-offs.

Pahiatua had already sealed the top spot and home advantage going into the round, and confirmed favourite status, with a comfortable 7 - 2 win over the home team Rangatira.

The biggest upset of the round was defending champions Manawatu, which went into the round in  second place, being white washed 9 - 0 by Feilding to miss out on a playoff spot. That loss left the door wide open for Marton, Foxton and Castlecliff to all make it through after wins in the final round. Marton defeated Wanganui 5.5 - 3.5, Foxton defeated Levin 6 - 3, and in the closest battle of the day Castlecliff snuck into 4th with a 5 - 4 win over Palmerston North. Palmerston North would have got through instead of Castlecliff had that result gone the other way.

So what this means is that on May 1 Pahiatua will play Castlecliff and Marton will play against Foxton, with both matches being played at Pahiatua. The winner of each semi final will play in the final that afternoon.

The great thing about this competition is that as it is played off handicap, matches can go either way, depending on how players compete on the day. And while home advantage might seem good, it will not guarantee a win, as Marton found out in the B Grade final last weekend.

We wish all teams all the best.
