The Manawatu Wanganui Strokeplay is being played this Sunday at Castlecliff and has attracted a field of 69 players thus far. Late entries can still be made either by entering here, or by contacting Rhys Watkins on 021 073 2013.
The mens overall championship playing for the Challenge Cup, is wide open this year with a number of players with a chance of taking the out the title. The Order of Merit leaders Regan Cording (Wanganui Open winner), and Hayden Ring (Horowhenua Open winner) will both be amongst the favourites, along with rep players Junior Tatana, Trent Munn, Stu Smith, and a list of other rep hopefuls. Notable players missing from this years event include Josh Munn (International playing duties), Lachie McDonald and Josh Sedgwick (both playing in the North Island Strokeplay at Waitangi Golf Club).
The womens event, playing for the new Challenge Shield, is also wide open, with Tara Raj amongst the favourites and looking to back up her Wanganui Open win. A name that has been missing for the past 4 years from Manawatu Wanganui is Maraea Durie, and she is now back in the district after being on a US Scholarship. It will be interesting to see if Maraea has the form that can get her straight back into rep selection contention. With the loss of Brydie, and Amber-Rose to US Scholarships, she may prove to be a welcome addition back into the squad.
The mens Shand Cup, and womens Sybil Green teams, are selected after this event, along with the mens Freyberg Masters.
