On a beautiful Northern Manawatu day 12 teams took on the Apiti Golf course in the annual Glendinning Cup challenge on Sunday October 12.
Teams from Apiti (2), Foxton, Hawkestone, Linton Camp, Manawatu, Pahiatua, Rangatira, Taihape, and Waiouru Golf Clubs along with guest teams from the District and Eagles Golfing Society made the trip.
The Apiti course was in excellent condition and the wonderful weather conditions made sure those who could handle the different type of course condition were well rewarded. There were 6 scores of 40 Stableford points or over and 12 scores between 36 and 39 points, proving that good golfers can play on any type of course.
The winning team representing Hawkestone GC had a total of 155 points, including the leading score of 47 points by Graham Bond. Taihape GC were 2nd with 148 points followed in 3rd by Rangitikei GC with 143 points.
Apiti Golf Club are to be congratulated for their organisation and exceptional hospitality on the day. The comments by all the participants showed that the day was enjoyed by all and a number of those experiencing Apiti for the first time vowed to return in the future.
The only disappointing feature of the day was that half of the District’s clubs were unable to muster 4 players to represent them in what is the longest running District competition. Maybe they thought that Apiti was on the other side of the ranges and the distance was too great!!
It was a great day out and well worth the effort.
