The Manawatu Wanganui mens Masters team comfortably defeated Taranaki in the annual match at the weekend, this year played at Wanganui. Unfortunately the weather played its part by delaying the start of the morning round. The teams agreed to play the first match over 10 holes resulting in a 5.5 - 2.5 advantage to Manawatu Wanganui. A full 18 holes in the afternoon in a strong wind was able to be played with Manawatu Wanganui prevailing 6 - 2. The overall result was a large 11.5 to 4.5 win to Manawatu Wanganui. Last year in the same contest Taranaki won at Te Ngutu golf club near Hawera, so it was great to reverse that result.
The Masters Men now have just one event left - the Challenge Cup, this Sunday to impress the selectors to confirm a spot in the 5 man team to play the Freyberg Masters at Waitangi in early November.
The Manawatu Wanganui team that played at Wanganui was: Stu Smith, Marty Field, Tony Chettleburgh, Mike Arnott, Justin Newland, Rick Harding, Ross Geary & Stu Gillespie.
