Harold, Hodge win Horowhenua Open titles

The Horowhenua Open held at Levin Golf Club was started in frosty and foggy conditions today. Conditions quickly improved once play got underway for pleasant morning conditions. A  cool southerly picked up in the afternoon to make conditions a little more challenging. Without top Manawatu Wanganui players Josh Munn, Lachie McDonald and Tyler Hodge the Mens field was wide open for a number of players to claim victory. In the end Palmerston North Golf Club player Rhys Harold finished the strongest to claim a one shot victory over district Golf Development Manager, Rhys Watkins. Harold had a 2 under par 70 in round 2 after a morning 75. Watkins went into the afternoon tied for the lead after a 71. A few missed short putts in his final 9 including a very careless missed tap in on the 35th hole resulting in a 4 putt, proved very costly. In 3rd place was Manawatu's Regan McConaghty with rounds of 73 and 74, followed by Wanganui player Mike Arnott (72, 76).

In the womens competition Levin player Brydie Hodge defended her title after rounds of 71 and 79, for a 1 shot victory over Manawatu's Emma Clayton (76, 75). Back in 3rd place was Wanganui's Amber-Rose Thompson-Newth (77, 79)

The event was the first round of the district Order of Merit tournament, which helps select the rep teams for the year. Selectors were present to name the teams for the annual match against Wellington to be played at Levin on Sunday August 10.
