New Zealand Under 13 Champion

Kalyn Ponga became Manawatu Wanganui's third straight NZ Under 13 champion after impressive rounds of 88 and a career best 80 to beat home his closest competitior by 3 shots. It is a great double having also won the district title in April. He will now follow in the footsteps of previous winners Trent Munn and Rhys Harold who have since gone on to bigger and better events having played senior and junior rep golf for the district in recent months. The official presentation will be held at the completion of the Under 19 event tomorrow and he will receive a huge cheer from the other 13 district players and parents that have also made the trip to Dunedin.

National Secondary Schools and Under 19 Championships - Blog

PHOTOSSeptember 3Wind, rain, hail, snow and about one minute of sunshine meant a tough day was had on both courses. Gale force icy winds buffeted the girls all day and then a quick hail storm came down to punish them further. Everyone but wonder kid Cecilia Cho seemed to be affected with scores sky rocketing into the 90's. On a pleaseant note Amber Rose Thompson-Newth shot a comendable 87 to take out the overall nett prize and a medal from NZ Golf. Keita and Maraea's interview played on Maori TV last night with Keita screaming as soon as it came on and laughing all the way through it - awesome to see the girls on the telly. Tyler kept improving as he finished with a 73 to tie for 24th, Kaylin had 78 for 35th and Hamish shot 79 along with Trent. As the final group putted out a snow storm passed over the club and remained whilst the under 17 players had a 3 hole playoff - bring on the North Island and fine weather next year. As it is Emma's birthday we have decided to hit the town - McDonalds, Laser Strike, Ten Pin and Mini Putt which will give them all one last chance for bragging rights in future weeks. It was a great week away with all the players and parents and we look forward to more success as the season continues with the upcoming Junior Interprovincial and other strokeplay events. September 2The story of the day was Kalyn Ponga who became our third straight winner of the NZ Under 13 title. Having travelled to the event with his father he added a career best 80 to his 88 to win the event by 3 shots - yee ha! Kaylin Huwyler also returned to form adding a 73 to his 79 to be our best placed boy in 31st with one round to go. The morning weather was the best of the day and the scores reflected that with 8 subpar rounds to the afternoons zero. Rhys Harold knew he needed to go lower than ever before to make the cut but fell 3 shots short after a sensational 73. As the Under 13 champ last year he is improving steadily all the time and will surely challenge for the under 15 title next year. Three male missed the cut which came at 159, Jeff Handcock (161), Matt Burroughs (162) and Rhys (162).The girls had a solid day but most slipped doewn the leaderboard except Maraea. Keita is the best placed at 12th after 77 and 86, Emma shot 90, Brydie had 84 and Amber 86. Everyone will be playing hard to get as far up the leaderboard by the end of the final round tomorrow. Boys Scores Girls ScoresSeptember 1Round One is over and the squad have returned a mixed bag of results. Keita Durie had her round of the year (77) to be 3rd at the girls events and Emma Clayton has the first round lead in the under 15 category after an 84. Maori TV did an interview with Keita and Maraea which is on tonight at 7.30pm - be sure to watch as it is hilarious. The boys didnt fare so well with the top score of 76 belonging to Trent which is 8 shots behind the leader Simon Brownlee. The greens at Balmacewen are pretty much lost - too much rain and too many people have turned them into bumpy slow nightmares. Hopefully the boys can adjust and have a better day on the greens tomorrow as they need to improve to get back into contention ot even make the cut. Everyone seemed in good spirits though and most of the early starters headed of for the Cadbury tour and the girls travelled up to the boys event to cheer on Jeff and our other late starters. Link to scoresAugust 31The weather finally improved but the southern winds still kept the temperature low. The girls had a good look at Chisholm Links and were very impressed with the layout and the spectacular views of the ocean and Dunedin Skyline. They are all hitting the ball well, with Emma cranking out huge drives which could be an advantage if the winds continue at the seaside links course. The boys were back up at Balmacewen which is based in the hills above the town. The course condition was the same as the past few days, wet and soft. The practice green was closed for the day as it was starting to look more lika a bunker than a green. Everyone was off the course by 1.30pm so it was a relaxing afternoon back at the hostel and in town. A few went off to the Cadbury Factory for the chocolate tour and some had a look at Baldwin Street, the steepest street in the world - Kayln and Kaylin managed to run up it which was a great effort. A quick game of soccer at the park across the road became a quick mud bath which could have been avoided if the TV the boys bought for $35 had been able to work Trent's Playstation. Anyone want a cheap TV?All the adults got stuck into cooking the first big meal of the trip, Butter Chicken and Stroganof for 19 - needless to say Jeff and Stephen won the Master Chef competition with the Butter Chicken beating home Marty, Phillipa and Paul. Four days into the trip means the hours are dragging on a bit and 7pm feels like 10pm so hopefully the kids all get a good nights sleep in their dorms (last night they were up playing music quizzes for ages) and they will hit the course ready to kick some backside and show the country just how good they are.August 30More rain! It never stopped all day which made conditions uncomfortable but the greens staff did a great job to ensure the 36 holes were completed. Tu Toa had an average day at the course finishing 9th - click here for the NZ Golf story/resultsThe travelling party grew to 18 with the arrival of the remaining players and parents - all be it a bit late for Hamish (booked wrong flight). With the airport 30 minutes out of town the van got a good workout with two return trips there and three return trips to the golf club. Add another trip to the supermarket and then another to Dominos as well! All the players have practice rounds booked tomorrow morning at their respective courses and will be hoping for the rain to ease to ensure the events get underway. The squad is in great spirits and we are all looking forward to some low scores and top results as the week progresses.August 29Wind and rain were hammering the hostel when we woke up and it did not improve all day. The outlook for tommorrow is not much better so umbrellas and wet weather gear are on alert. After the practice round the other teams were looking a bit ragged but the intensive conditioning programmes used at Tu Toa may have given this team an edge as they looked just as fresh at the end as the start. The Hodge family and Louisa Harold joined the group in the afternoon - making dinner a bigger job with 10 in the party. Everyone is in great spirits and we look forward to seeing an improvemnt on last years 8th placing. Rhys Harold is the first away in the morning at 746am so an early night and an early morning are in front of us. Nine more people will join up with us tommorrow in preparation for the Under 19's starting on Wednesday.August 28After a long trip form Palmerston North to Christchurch in the Van and Trailer I met up with our district school champions Tu Toa at Christchurch Airport and we made our way down to Dunedin. The Secondary Schools event will be played at Otago Golf Club which is well known for it's elevation changes - think Belmont on steriods. Arriving late we decided to settle in and hit the course the next day for the official practice round.

Rep Squad at Otaki Open

Ewan Westergaard took out the Otaki Open (Wellington Trial) with scores of 70 & 70. Even with seven three putts in the two rounds he was too strong beating home fellow squad member Lachie McDonald by 1 shot, Josh Munn by 2, Matthew Preston by 3 and Tyler Hodge by 4.The remaining squad members had mixed results and sadly Angus Findlay's back injury flared up again putting him in doubt for coming events. The representative season starts up in 3 weeks with next weeks Horowhenua Open at Levin the chance for players to shine in front of selectors before the 12 man senior and 6 man junior teams are named.

Talented youngsters Kaylin Huwyler (Tawhero) and Trent Munn (Manawatu) have been selected in the Southern Region Academy, the academy directly preceeding the national Srixon Academy in which fellow district golfer Tyler Hodge of Levin is a member. Both Huwyler and Munn have impressive Cv's to back up their selections having won big titles such as Munn's North Island Under 17 title in January and Huwyler taking out the Silk and Kelly Cups in late March. Both players represented the district at senior level in 2009 and will push the more senior players for Toro team positions by years end if they have anything to do with it.
